Our Program

Wylie Preparatory Academy is a unique private school that utilizes an integrated instructional approach to education in order to produce a higher degree of academic achievement. The school is essentially a concrete expression of University-Model School®. There are two proven elements of educational success: the professional instruction of a classroom teacher and the one-on-one instruction and/or guidance of each student’s parent. Other proven elements which are a part of this school’s programming include low student/teacher ratios, hands-on learning, a strong work ethic for students, effective curriculum and local school operation and management.

What is a University-Model School®?

University-Model School® (UMS) was developed as a means of acquiring a high-quality education which helps disciple Christian young people while strengthening the home.  We hope to accomplish this by providing an academically sound education in a structure that integrates the home and the school in the common enterprise of making disciples. Thus, a quality education, centered around the Lord Jesus Christ, also becomes quality family time devoted to learning more about the Creator and His creation.

U
MS takes the best aspects of 1) traditional, 2) full-time public and private schools and 3)  home schools and molds them into one model.  UMS uses a university-style schedule where students spend alternate days at school and home where parents continue their instruction.  Central classroom instruction is conducted by professional teachers teaching in their areas of expertise and the home is considered a satellite classroom.

Because of the high level of parent involvement, students receive excellent, well-rounded education for less cost.  Because parents are spending more time with their children, avenues for meaningful communication are available for parents to share their faith, values and convictions on a routine basis.

The UMS academic program meets and exceeds statewide standards for content, skills, and the level of rigor normally associated with college-preparatory programs.  The structure, pacing and accountability provided by the formal school structure are exactly what many parents seek.  UMS provides the perfect solution for parents who feel overwhelmed by home schooling but do not have the means to afford private school or are reluctant to have their children's time absorbed in a full-time school.

UMS caters to a wide variety of student needs by allowing a range of enrollment opportunities.  A student may choose to take only one or two classes, or may opt to take a full academic load at Wylie Prep.  Much like a college catalog, the WPA catalog will be available at registration time with descriptions of courses and prerequisites.  In addition, the catalog will include a description of the parental role for each class.

The parental role ranges from direct instructor in cooperation with the classroom teacher to a monitor of student progress.  Parents receive written instructions from the classroom teacher on a regular basis outlining homework assignments, follow-up study for material covered in class, and any preparation or review needed for each class.

Benefits of UMS

High Academic Standards Emphasizing a Strong Student Work Ethic: Although less time is spent in school, Wylie Prep. is still a full-time program, and high standards have been set to encourage the development and maintenance of a strong work ethic among students.

Low Student/Teacher Ratio: Low student/teacher ratios provide for greater instructional effectiveness and thus better use of limited classroom time. Wylie Prep. has set its maximum student/teacher ratio at 16:1 for all core classes

Professional and Local Management: Wylie Prep. is directed by professionals and governed at the school level.

Admission Policies That Consider Student Supervision: Since students participating in a University-Model School® will spend less time in the central classroom at school, Wylie Prep. has admission policies that consider the adult supervision of minors while students are in their satellite classroom at home.

To start the Admission Process:
  • Attend an Information Meeting
  • Review School Material
  • Pray about your decision
  • Complete and return Admission Application
  • Sign up for Placement Testing

Semester-by-Semester Admission and Registration: Students will enter courses only at the beginning of a semester, not while the semester is in progress.

Semester Length: Given that classroom instructional time is decreased significantly in this model, the regular semester length for Wylie Prep. will be no less than 16 weeks in duration.

Single Subject (and Grade Level) Classes: All academic classes are offered as single subject (or grade level) classes to best utilize available instructional time.

Course Prerequisites: Course prerequisites have been established to provide the professional teachers with a clear starting point for course instruction. These prerequisites include admissions testing.

Flexible Course Level Registration: Course registration at Wylie Prep. is flexible enough to allow students to advance by individual course rather than by complete grade level to ensure mastery of all subject matter in a given course sequence.

Grade Levels: Grades 1 through 11 will be offered in fall 2006.

Non-denominational: Wylie Prep.’s Statement of Faith is fundamental to basic Christian tenets and contains those doctrines to which we unreservedly adhere and teach. We desire to remain united in the salvation and love of Christ, avoiding the dissention which may be caused by denominational distinctives.

Non-discriminatory Policy: Wylie Preparatory Academy admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to its students and does not discriminate on the basis of race in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarships and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.
